Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most frequently asked questions about Human.

    Human
  • Why Human? +

  • Human helps you move 30 minutes or more, every day. Our app runs in the background of your phone and will help you interweave more activity into your daily life. Join us and enjoy your 30 minutes, every day. Find out why 30 minutes.

  • How does Human work? +

  • Human uses the sensors in your phone to track your daily activity. We automatically categorize most daily activities like walking, running, biking. Only activities of a minute or more will count towards your daily goals. A short walk during lunch, your daily active commute, or a run will be detected automatically and shown in your timeline. Getting from the couch to the kitchen, a trip to the watercooler, or slowly strolling through a store will not count towards your daily 30.

Unfortunately our algorithms can't pick up every single activity automatically. Individual patterns vary a lot and your phone might not pick up all activity. In those cases you can change the activity in your timeline: Tap the activity, then on the detail screen, change the activity type to the correct one.

  • Why 30 minutes? +

  • You have to eat, sleep and breathe to live. But in order to stay healthy, the human body also needs at least 30 minutes or more of moderate activity every day. It's proven to be the best form of preventive medicine out there - and it's not only free, but also super easy to do.

  • What does Human track? +

  • Human uses the motion sensors and location services in your phone to track most activity of a minute or more. We can pick up most of your walking, running, and cycling activity automatically. Sometimes you might need to manually correct activities in your timeline, because your phone can't detect them correctly (tap the activity in the timeline, tap the activity type to change).

Only activities of a minute or more count towards your daily goals. A walk around the block, getting off the bus or metro one stop earlier, or a short run or ride will all count. Unloading the dishwasher or strolling through the supermarket will probably not make it into your timeline. It's our goal to gently push you to enjoy everyday activity and interweave more walks, runs, and rides into your daily life. Let's get active.

  • How do I get started? +

    1. Download Human for iOS or Android & sign up.
    2. Get active & keep your phone close to your body, more tips here.
    3. Set the intervals of reminders to move when inactive in Profile > Settings > Tracking options.
    4. Build a continuous streak of Daily 30s.
    5. Use Human Pulse to know how your activity levels stack up compared to others.
    6. Enjoy your active lifestyle!
    7. For more daily inspiration, follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

It's our goal to gently push you to enjoy everyday activity and interweave more walks, runs, and rides into your daily life. Remember, only activities of a minute or more count towards your daily goals. Unloading the dishwasher or strolling through the supermarket will probably not make it into your timeline. Let's get active!

  • Does Human track my steps? +

  • Human does not track any steps. Instead, we try focus on active minutes to try and stimulate you to reach 30, 60 or 90 minutes of activity every day. We believe that active minutes are a better way to think about exercise and activity. Step counts are very limited and exclude many forms of physical activity that help you to stay in shape. We use low power location services and the motion sensors of your phone to detect activity types for outdoor activity and measure the intensity of your indoor activity. Based on that we can track how many minutes you move and make accurate estimates of how many Calories you've burned throughout the day.

The iPhone 5s, 6 and 6s have a built-in step counter that will populate the step count section in the Health app if you're interested in counting steps.

  • Tracking
  • Can I use Human on two devices at the same time? tracking +

  • We do not recommend to use Human on several devices with the same user account, because you would end up with multiple entries per activity. If you need to use several devices, please create different user accounts for each device.

  • Can I track my activities abroad? tracking +

  • If you’re abroad or you cannot use mobile data, you can still use your phone to track your activities. Please ensure to have location services and especially Wifi enabled (even if your phone isn’t connected), and go about your day.

Once back at the hotel, and connected to a Wifi network, please open Human to sync to our server to analyze and show your activities in your timeline. We recommend to sync Human after maximum 2 days, as else the amount of data to sync may be too high.

  • How does Human impact the battery life of my phone? tracking +

  • Human uses the location services and motion sensors in your phone which both impact battery life. How much really depends on the type of phone you're using, how you use your phone, your activity patterns and network reception.

Most of our users get easily through a normal day on a single charge with normal tracking and we're improving this as we go along. We recommend charging your phone when you go to sleep.

Read more on how to optimize battery consumption on Human for iOS and for Android.

  • How does Human estimate calories? tracking +

  • We calculate the estimated number of calories burned with your daily activity based on your weight, the duration, and intensity of an activity. We use a combination of location services and motion sensors to determine the intensity of your activity. Unlike most step counters, we don't just track walking and running, but also include calories burnt with cycling and indoor activities.

Calories in Human are estimates, based on calculations that include your weight, duration, activity type, and intensity. We benchmarked our calculations with research by Harvard Medical School. The actual number of calories that you burn with physical activity may vary from Human to Human, especially when you're doing high intensity exercise. For basic low-intensity movements like walking or jogging variance should be pretty low.

Most adults have a "resting metabolic rate" (calories burnt by just "living") of around 1700kcal to 2300kcal per day. We don't include this resting metabolic rate in your daily overview and only show the extra calories burnt with physical activity.

  • Help! My streak broke because it missed my activity. tracking +

  • We're sorry to hear your streak broke because Human didn't track you. Let's try to get it back!

Please try to log out of the app, and then log in again to make sure all activities in your timeline all completely in sync. If this doesn't give you the streak back, let's try this: Change a stationary activity in your timeline to Active to claim some extra minutes and force Human to re-calculate your streak.

If this doesn't work, we're unfortunately out of options.

    Please note:

    • We cannot guarantee for 100% correct tracking (which includes the streak calculation) when you're in a battery saving mode as we're reducing accuracy to save battery.
    • If you forget your phone or it's not charged, it's a pity - we certainly don't think you've been hanging out on your couch, but we cannot fix your streak without sufficient activity being tracked.
  • Other
  • What changes after Human joins Mapbox? other +

  • Being part of Mapbox, Human will continue to operate as a freemium model stand-alone activity tracking app, with better map features than before.

We’re excited about this new opportunity and look forward to improving how people move around cities.

  • What do the colors mean? other +

  • The orange color of a dot on the map, or on your timeline means you have reached the daily minimum of 30 minutes. The blue color means you've accumulated more than 60 minutes. Yellow (or gold) indicates that someone has moved more than 90 minutes that day.

  • What kind of data do you store? other +

  • We store location and motion sensor data to track and categorize your daily activity. To get an idea about what data we store, you can always request the entirety of your data in a raw data format in the settings of the app (once every 10 days).

  • How do you use my data? other +

  • We analyze your data to categorize your activity and provide you with real-time stats. We use anonymized, aggregated data to improve Human as a whole. It helps us optimize our activity detection and measure the overall performance of the app. We might use aggregated stats, which can not be be tied to individual users, to help you compare yourself to others and learn about Human activity. We believe this aggregated data can help to make our app better and can help researchers, urban planners, and others to improve our lifestyle and environment. We will never share any of your personal identifiable data without your explicit consent.

Take a look at Human Cities to see how people move around the world.

  • I've requested my data. How do I open it? other +

  • When you request your data in the app settings, we'll send you a temporary link to a package of all your raw data. The data is packed as a zip file, which contains an overview of your all-time stats, and all your data in CSV and JSON format. You can open the archive on a computer.

Check out this blogpost for more information.

  • Can I delete my account and destroy my data? other +

  • Sure you can. and we'll erase your account and all your data. Please send your request from the e-mail address you also used for signing up. We'll send you a confirmation once we've processed your request.

  • Do you have any plans to open up an API? other +

  • We're looking forward to open our API for external developers and give data junkies access to their full data set. when you would be interested in early API access. Be sure to also check out our iOS Health integration.

The minimum password length is 8 characters. More characters will improve security even more.

  • iOS Tracking
  • Why didn't Human track my activity? tracking +

  • Sorry if we missed any activity! We working hard to make the app as stable and accurate as possible, but unfortunately it might happen that the app stops tracking or that we weren't able to detect an activity.

We try to balance accuracy and battery life, which sometimes might cause erroneous tracking. Especially in areas with bad reception this could happen more often.

To be able to detect your activity, please verify the following in your iPhone’s Settings > Human:

    Human in your iOS settings

    1. Are permissions to use Location Services on?
    2. Is Background App Refresh enabled?
    3. Is Human running in the background?
    4. Fitness & Motion enabled?
    5. Do you have your system clock set to automatic, or not set to a time in the future?

All settings correct and still no tracking? The easiest way to make sure everything is set up okay is to do a clean install: Tap and hold the Human icon on your phone, remove Human, reboot your phone, and install again (human.co/app). Any previous data is safe on our servers. Sorry for the hassle.

Please if you run into any problems.

  • How can I improve the tracking accuracy? tracking +

  • Human uses the motion coprocessor and location services in your phone to detect activity. Without device movement it's extremely hard to pick up an activity. Carry your phone in a pocket or a bag on your body for the best results. Please keep Wifi enabled in your iOS settings for the best location updates, with little battery impact.

From Human 8.1. on we offer a separate High accuracy mode which offers more accurate tracking in return for slightly higher impact on your battery.

Some activities are very hard to detect and unfortunately there's a lot of difference in motion patterns for individual users. Human reads most of the activity types from a little chip in your iPhone (5S, 6, 6S and SE) called motion coprocessor. Activities detected by the motion coprocessor might not be super accurate for all types of activities or for every individual user. We try to filter and optimize as much as we can and combine different types of data to make the best guess. For some activity types, like cycling, you might need to manually correct them in your timeline (tap the activity in the timeline, tap the activity type to change). Your feedback and manual corrections help us to optimize the activity detection. Thanks!

  • Why didn’t Human track my bike ride? tracking +

  • Sorry we missed your bike ride! As we outline in this blog post some things have changed since Human 6 in order to drastically improve battery life. Unfortunately your iPhone might not pick up cycling as well as before, but you can manually correct it in your timeline (tap activity, tap 'change'). We use the corrections to optimize our detection bit by bit.

  • Why is there no map for my activity? tracking +

  • We don't show maps if we don't have enough location points for an accurate path. To save as much battery as possible, we try to minimize the use of location services. Unfortunately that means that (mostly shorter) activities won't always be shown with a full map.

  • How comes there's a weird path on the map? tracking +

  • We try to save as much battery as possible, which means we might sometimes pick up weird signal jumps like this. Most of the location services we use are based on cell towers and wifi networks. Over time the accuracy will improve, since Apple indexes familiar networks to improve location services.

With the weird location data, the app may assume you were in a different mode of activity than you were. Please go ahead and change the activity to the correct mode via the detail screen accessible from the timeline.

  • Why do you track my car ride as cycling? tracking +

  • Unfortunately we can't get the detection 100% correct at all times. Especially the difference between car rides and biking are very hard to distinguish, since they vary a lot from user to user. We prefer to be on the active side and have mild bias towards cycling.
The good news is that you can correct any mistakes we make. If you tap an activity and tap the activity type in the detail view, you can manually correct the mode. We're using those changes to tweak our detection bit by bit.

If you usually don't cycle you can disable biking detection in your Human settings.

  • How comes motorized transport tracking is less accurate? tracking +

  • We help you move 30 minutes or more, every day. We’ve prioritized activities like running, walking, and cycling. By focusing on physical activity, we can reduce battery drainage when using motorized transport.

We offer more accurate transport tracking when your phone is plugged in while driving. Read more about our collaboration with Zendrive here.

  • Why does Human say I'm moving while I'm stationary?

  • Why does Human say I’m stationary while I'm active? tracking +

  • Human 6 picks up activities of a minute or more. In case we missed something you can correct a stationary activity manually in the timeline.

Human 6 is a little bit more strict on activities than previous versions to make it more challenging to reach your goals, so you might see less random ‘Active’ activity in your timeline.

  • How does Human impact the battery life of my phone? tracking +

  • Human uses the location services and motion sensors in your phone which both impact battery life. How much really depends on the type of phone, how you use your phone, your activity patterns and network reception. From Human 8.1 onwards, on Apple’s latest iPhone models (5S, 6, 6S and SE) the standard tracking mode is already optimized to cause less impact on your battery. Maps & metrics might be slightly less accurate, which is why we offer a separate High accuracy mode which offers more accurate tracking in return for higher impact on your battery.

Most of our users get easily through a normal day on a single charge with normal tracking and we're improving this as we go along. We recommend charging your phone when you go to sleep.

  • How can I save more battery? tracking +

  • Battery life varies a lot between users and mostly depends on the device you use, network conditions, and daily activity. Please keep in mind that the battery reports in iOS are relative: they show the percentage that an app uses compared to other apps, not the absolute decrease your battery (like the number in the status bar), so numbers will vary from day to day and depend on how many other apps you use.

From Human 8.1 onwards, on Apple’s latest iPhone models (5S, 6, 6S and SE) the standard tracking mode is optimized to cause less impact on your battery. Maps & metrics might be slightly less accurate, which is why we offer a separate High accuracy mode which offers more accurate tracking in return for higher impact on your battery.

  • iOS Health
  • How can I share my activity data with other apps? iOS Health +

  • Human supports iOS Health. If you give us permission to write your activity to the iOS Health app, other apps can request access to that data. This way you can for example track how much Calories you burn with Human and use your activity stats in other apps. To save battery we only sync activities to the Health app when you open Human to the foreground.

We wrote a blog post that explains how to get the most out of activity tracking with iOS Health.

  • How do I show data in the Health app? iOS Health +

  • If you give Human permission to write to iOS Health, we can write the following data categories for you:

    • Active Calories
    • Cycling Distance
    • Walking + Running Distance
    • Workouts (not visible in the Health app)

If you go open the Health app and tap Health Data, you'll find an overview of all Categories. Go into Fitness and open one of the above Categories. If you turn on the switch Show on Dashboard this category will be visible on your dashboard.

    Empty Dashboard in iOS Health

We wrote a blog post that explains how to get the most out of activity tracking with iOS Health.

  • Does Human work with MyFitnessPal? iOS Health +

  • Both Human and MyFitnessPal support iOS Health to exchange data. If you give Human permission to write data to the iOS Health app and give MyFitnessPal permission to read, your Human activity will automatically show up in MyFitnessPal when you open the app. To save battery we only sync activities to the Health app when you open Human to the foreground.

MyFitnessPal uses the activity from Human to show how much Calories you burned with exercise in your diary. It will also give an overview of individual activities such as running, walking, and biking. Indoor "Active" activities show up as "Circuit training". A bit confusing, but unfortunately that was the only "generic" category we could use in iOS Health.

On our blog we explain step by step how to get your activity data in MyFitnessPal.

  • I have duplicate or missing data in iOS Health. How do I fix this? iOS Health +

  • Unfortunately sometimes the sync to iOS Health fails. If you open Human and go into the settings, you'll find the option "iOS Health sync". If you tap this we'll open a popup with some explanation about iOS Health. At the same time we do a full sync for the past 7 days. That means that we delete any duplicate Human data and insert all activites again. It might take a while before the charts in iOS Health will update. Check back after a few minutes and your data should be all cleaned up.

  • iOS Clubs
  • What are Human Clubs? iOS Clubs +

  • Human’s Club feature is the best way to get friends, family or co-workers to be active together. After all, together it’s more fun, no matter if you choose to sweat it out on a run or enjoy the countryside on a weekend hike or bike ride. If you and other club members are not in the same city or country, you'll still be able to follow and cheer their activities on the club timeline.

The timeline of a Human Club

The reason the club feature makes it so easy to get active together, is that the competition element is very soft, we call it 'casual competition’. We’ve listed a few examples of clubs on Human that are rocking it here on our blog.Read on to find out how to create a club.

  • How do I create my own Club? iOS Clubs +

  • You can create your own Human Club on the Club screen.

    1. Tap 'Create' (top-right corner)
    2. Name your club and customize it with a photo and / or a description that describes the cause or objective of your club. Tap 'Create' in the top-right corner to confirm.

  • Android Tracking
  • Why does Human track me cycling / running / in transport when I wasn’t actually? Tracking +

  • We read activities from Google Fit. Unfortunately the Fit tracking might not always be 100% correct. We try to filter data as much as we can. Keep your phone as close to your body (preferably pocket of pants) for the best results. Any mistakes you can easily correct in the timeline: Tap the activity, tap Edit icon to change.

  • Why doesn’t Human track my activity? Tracking +

  • Human is using data from Google Fit to track your activity. Without Google Fit, we unfortunately can’t track your day. Please make sure that you have Google Fit installed on your phone and that Fit registers daily activity in the timeline. Find out more here. Do you have Google Fit installed? Then please verify if Human has permissions to track you: Profile / Settings / Tracking > Enable tracking.

  • Do I need to have Google Fit installed? Tracking +

  • Yes, see ‘Why doesn’t Human track my activity?'

  • Does Human write to Google Fit? Tracking +

  • Human does not write activities to Google Fit. We only read data from Google Fit and combine that with other sensor data to build your timeline in Human. Tracking in Google Fit is unfortunately not 100% correct at all times, same for Human, but you can manually correct any mistakes in our timeline.

  • Can I join Human Clubs? Tracking +

  • At this moment, Human for Android does not feature clubs unfortunately. On Android we focus on leaderboards in your city and neighborhood instead, so you can compare your activity with people nearby.

  • Why does Pulse not work for me? Tracking +

  • Your city may not have enough Humans to rank you with. To protect the privacy of our users, we hide leaderboards when there are not enough people nearby. Invite your friends to grow Human and unlock the leaderboards in your town.

  • How can I save more battery? Tracking +

  • Battery life varies a lot between users and mostly depends on the device you use, network conditions, and daily activity.

Human for Android offers three tracking modes, so you can balance battery life and accuracy to your own liking. You can use the most accurate settings to get the best overview of your day, or tune down the settings a bit when you're using an older device or have more spotty network connection.

Find out more about these tracking modes in Which tracking mode should I choose?

  • Which tracking mode should I choose? Tracking +

  • Human on Android offers the following modes:

    High Accuracy (default)
The most accurate setting to track your day, uses GPS (only when active), WIFI and cell to track your movent. Works nicely on modern phones, may use a little more battery on older models or phones with old batteries.
    Balanced
Same as above, but does not use the GPS. This results in less accurate paths, but also less battery usage. Might be preferable on older phones or in rural areas where the phone would switch to GPS more often.
    Battery Saving
a passive mode which results in the least amount of battery used. In this mode you don't get paths for your activities and not all activities can be detected.
